Brazil mines 5 percent of the world's vanadium, and Largo is pitching it to AI data centers. The pitch has no megawatt-hours yet.

Largo says data center demand for vanadium flow batteries is rising exponentially. USGS puts Brazil at 5,300 tons of a 110,000 ton world, against China's 82,000, and Brazil supplied 47 percent of US vanadium pentoxide imports in 2021 to 2024. The same week, Libra put its Minas Gerais rare earth ground up for sale.

Largo, the Canadian-listed company that mines vanadium at Maracás Menchen in Bahia, wants AI data centers to become its next market. Speaking about Storion Energy, the flow battery venture Largo set up with Stryten, co-CEO Alberto Arias told CNN Brasil that “this company is seeing an exponential increase in demand for vanadium batteries in the data center industry,” and that Brazil has “enormous capacity” to expand vanadium production for data centers [CNN Brasil, 21 Oct 2026; desk translation from Portuguese]. The mechanism is real: a vanadium redox flow battery stores power for hours in liquid electrolyte and suits the firm, long-duration backup an AI campus needs when the grid connection is late. The numbers behind the pitch are not there yet. Neither Largo nor its battery affiliate has published a single data center deployment.

What’s happening

  • The mine. Maracás Menchen, about 250 km from Salvador in Bahia, has produced since 2014 and holds one of the world’s highest-grade vanadium deposits [CNN Brasil, 21 Oct 2026]. Largo produced 2,616 tons of V2O5 equivalent in the first quarter of 2026, up from 1,297 tons a year earlier, and 2,900 tons in the second quarter [Largo Q1 2026 MD&A, SEC 6-K, 11 May 2026; Largo Q2 2026 release, SEC 6-K, 23 Jul 2026]. In September it said it would run at about 876 tons a month, the low end of its guidance, and lift high-purity vanadium to about 68 percent of output from about 4 percent in the first half [Largo release, SEC 6-K, 23 Sep 2026].
  • The world. USGS estimates 2025 mine production at 110,000 tons of contained vanadium: China 82,000, Russia 21,000, Brazil 5,300, South Africa 5,000 [USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026, vanadium]. Desk arithmetic: China is 75 percent, Brazil 4.8 percent. The United States mined none from primary ore.
  • The battery channel. Largo’s battery play runs through Storion Energy, a joint venture with Stryten Energy in which Largo held 37.37 percent at March 31, 2026, diluted from 50 percent [Largo Q1 2026 MD&A]. Storion’s news page shows data center marketing (CES in January, an April white paper validating its stacks inside TerraFlow Energy’s long-duration UPS architecture, and a June forum showcase of “solutions to support AI data centers”), but the only sized project on the page is TerraFlow’s 9.6 MW, 48 MWh flow battery in Bellville, Texas, announced in July 2025 and not described as a data center [Storion Energy, news and events].
  • The defense contract. Largo was selected in June to supply high-purity V2O5 to the US Defense Logistics Agency, and received a first order of US$60.1 million in July, with deliveries through January 2030 [CNN Brasil, 21 Oct 2026]. The US$125 million ceiling is shared: the Pentagon contract notice names US Vanadium LLC of Arkansas and Largo Resources USA as joint awardees of a sole-source contract running to June 21, 2031 [ClearanceJobs, Pentagon contract listing, 1 Jul 2026].

Brazil angle

Brazil matters to the United States far more than its 5 percent world share suggests. USGS lists Brazil as the source of 47 percent of US vanadium pentoxide imports in 2021 to 2024 [USGS MCS 2026]. That is why the 2025 tariff fight hurt: USGS records that the August 2025 US tariff increase to 50 percent on many Brazilian imports covered high-purity vanadium, and that a major Brazilian producer sought an exemption after delays and defaults on its high-purity contracts. Largo says the 50 percent tariffs were eliminated in February 2026 and that it resumed high-purity sales from Baltimore bonded stock [Largo Q1 2026 MD&A].

The balance sheet is the constraint on any expansion. In May, Largo’s own filing said material uncertainties cast “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue as a going concern, with total debt of US$108.4 million all due within twelve months [Largo Q1 2026 MD&A]. In August it signed a binding term sheet with Banco do Brasil, BTG Pactual, Bradesco, Santander and Caixa to push US$82.2 million of debt from September 2026 to March 2030 [Largo release, 20 Aug 2026]. By September 23, definitive agreements with Caixa and Banco do Brasil covered about 48 percent of that bank debt, with the rest still in talks [Largo release, SEC 6-K, 23 Sep 2026]. The next day Largo sold 10.2 million shares with warrants at US$0.56 for US$5.7 million gross, to be used for working capital “including to pay trade creditors,” after ending June with US$5.1 million in cash [Largo prospectus supplement, SEC, 24 Sep 2026]. A company refinancing its banks and raising cash to pay suppliers is not yet a company that can build new vanadium capacity for data centers.

The same week showed the other side of Canadian capital in Brazilian minerals. Libra Energy Materials reported the last results of a 22-hole auger program at its Penelope rare earth project in Minas Gerais: ten of the fifteen holes in the release had at least one sample above 500 ppm total rare earth oxides, holes averaged about 12 meters, and recoveries are undetermined. Libra called Penelope “non-core” and said it may monetize it through earn-ins, joint ventures or a sale, while it concentrates on lithium in Québec [Libra release via Newsfile, 20 Oct 2026; CNN Brasil, 22 Oct 2026]. Oceana Metals, by contrast, closed its purchase of the Serra Negra rare earth and niobium project in Alto Paranaíba on October 16 for US$2.95 million in cash and 15.5 million shares, with no declared resource yet, and its shares fell about 27 percent after closing [Brasil Mineral, 21 Oct 2026]. Desk arithmetic: Serra Negra’s best reported interval, 50 meters at 4.0 percent TREO from re-sampled historical core, is 40,000 ppm, about fifteen times the best interval in Libra’s October 20 release, 1 meter at 2,585 ppm [Brasil Mineral, 21 Oct 2026; Libra release, 20 Oct 2026].

US angle

Washington has no primary vanadium mine, USGS lists no government stockpile, and net import reliance was 41 percent in 2025 [USGS MCS 2026]. The Defense Logistics Agency contract that could change that is split between Largo’s US arm, selling Brazilian-mined material, and US Vanadium in Arkansas [ClearanceJobs, 1 Jul 2026]. For data centers, the US channel is Storion, which has placed equipment orders to expand electrolyte capacity without disclosing a figure [Largo Q1 2026 MD&A].

China angle

China sets the price. USGS says most Chinese vanadium is a coproduct of titanomagnetite processed in steelmaking, that vanadium “is largely dependent on the market characteristics of the steel industry, particularly the Chinese steel sector,” and that the average Chinese V2O5 price fell to US$5.02 per pound in 2025 from US$5.44 [USGS MCS 2026]. A flow battery buyer is therefore buying an input priced by Chinese steel demand, not by data center demand.

Africa angle

South Africa is the producer losing ground. USGS estimates its output fell from 8,050 tons in 2024 to 5,000 in 2025 [USGS MCS 2026]. Desk arithmetic: a 38 percent drop, which puts Brazil, at 5,300 tons, slightly ahead of South Africa in the 2025 estimate.

What it means

Vanadium enters this desk’s coverage through one mechanism: long-duration storage at and around AI campuses. USGS notes that flow battery installations increased worldwide in 2025, but that high capital costs, limited high-purity feedstock and competing chemistries remain key challenges [USGS MCS 2026]. Largo has the high-purity feedstock, a plan to make far more of it, and a US defense customer. What it does not have yet is a disclosed data center order, a disclosed electrolyte capacity, or a balance sheet free of its banks. Until one of those appears, “exponential” is a company’s description of its own demand, not a market number.

What to watch

  1. A named data center flow battery order from Storion or TerraFlow. Any MWh figure tied to a named campus would turn the pitch into a number [Storion Energy, news and events].
  2. Definitive agreements with Largo’s remaining lenders. About 52 percent of the US$82 million bank debt was still outside signed agreements on September 23 [Largo release, 23 Sep 2026]. Desk arithmetic from the 48 percent signed.
  3. A second Defense Logistics Agency delivery order. The first was US$60.1 million against a US$125 million ceiling shared with US Vanadium [CNN Brasil, 21 Oct 2026; ClearanceJobs, 1 Jul 2026].
